Green Housewarming Gift

    Newer Older

Friends of ours recently bought a house, and their parents threw them a send off party where everyone was invited to bring their favourite cleaning products. Not wanting to miss an opportunity to spread the good green word, I got a bucket and filled it with vinegar, borax, baking soda, a spray bottle, a hand-knit cotton washcloth and a copy of my friend Adria's book, Ecoholic, with all kinds of tips for living a green life.

Vinegar and baking soda are key. Never tried borax before though...

I think Borax is somewhat questionably "green" when it comes to the fact that it is mined, and mining is just generally bad for the enviro. But it is all-natural, and it cuts grease like nothing I've tried. I have asthma and I've stopped using commercial cleaning products (studies have linked adult asthma with inadvertent combining of cleaning agents in the home). I don't know how Borax ever fell out of favour - it's cheap and versatile, it works better than most things I've tried and a little goes a long way.
