String Quilt Remix

    Newer Older

This is a string quilt I have been working on for my sister. Initially I planned on using the multiple diamonds layout that is most popular with this paper pieced block. However, I just could not face the prospect of making 16 more blocks so I began contemplating other layouts. After doing some looking around on flickr and the Web I came up with this one (similar to a values quilt layout). I think I like it; but, it may need one more row across the bottom so it is a rectangle instead of a square...opinions? Edit: I went ahead and added another row across the bottom. Also, I've learned that the name of this layout is Barn Raising.

GirlReaction Crafts, flickrdeb50, and 71 other people added this photo to their favorites.

I would vote for another row. No one ever complained about a quilt that was too long. (But I have one that allows my toes to peek out of - not fun.)

Wow...thanks for all of the positive reinforcement :o) I was a little nervous breaking away from the norm with this string design. I like it the size it is but think I will go with adding one more row. It's going to be a lap/snuggle quilt so I want it big enough to wrap up in. I still have to add borders so that increase the size also.

Nervous about breaking away from the norm???

BREAK AWAY!!!! Seriously. This is SO eye-catching and stunning. I think it's fabulous. I'm with the "make it longer" crowd...even though I HATE making string blocks. It will definitely make it better, although it's not possible that it could LOOK any better. It's really great!!

I love the off-center Barn Raising setting and it looks great in the string blocks :)

Thanks! I'm really excited with how this is turning out :o)
I'm really liking this setting...I'm going to try a Linda Rotz Miller type of border and have diamonds (squares on point) going down the right side and across the bottom to play up the off center design. I can't wait to get started on them :o)
