newspapers (Tehrān)

Newer Older

Our Iranian-American guide told us that even though each newspaper is essentially the mouthpiece of a political party, and despite some government censorship, there is still a far broader range of opinions to be found in Iranian newspapers than there is in the mainstream newspapers in the US (because there are far more viable parties than in our two-party system).

Interesting, n'est-ce pas?

Somehow it was clear I had to fave this one, too...
You are really good in telling stories in pictures...

Interesting indeed! I always love newspapers, as you know, but this is a great shot. Did you buy the English-language newspapers or one of the others?

I'm sorry that right now I don't have time to respond to all your wonderful comments - I'm rushing to leave for Chicago and may not have internet access again til Sunday.

Please don't think I'm not grateful - please believe me that I ***LOVE*** getting your comments!!! LOVE IT!!!! :-) I promise to respond properly when I return! :-)

what's scary ? ... I think it's great to have varied newspapers and while non-dictatorships may have more "Move-On.org" type websites and blogs etc that are directly counter the current chief of state, gov, etc & legal, I don't know many nations no matter how free that have much MAIN STREAM media that isn't fairly homogenized.

Local papers may be less so but NYTimes & USA TODAY, NBC, CNN, etc reappear most everywhere in USA. Neue Zurcher Zeitung, Le Monde, London Times reappear in quasi duplicates all across their continent.

I'm also interested in knowing if you can read Farsi or if the guide explained the texts? Photos you could recognize w/o reading captions. But did you learn the script for "USA" for instance which you highlight as well as pics?

What startles me is TWO English language DAILIES.

  6. birdfarm 96 months ago | reply

Monika, thank you for your kind words and all your fave-ing! :-) You are too kind to me and my pix!

Rogiro, I didn't buy any at this newsstand (I bought water!) but we received free newspapers on the plane (Day Three, coming soon!) - one of the regular dailies in Persian was on our seat when we boarded (a hardliner paper with a big headline about the U.S., that I haven't gotten translated); then, as they figured out they had foreigners on the flight, they brought all of us a copy of one of the English language dailies - so hospitable as always. :-)

    Pug, what's scary? Just curious...

Mom, please be nice to Pug, she's wonderful! And yes I can read the Persian, although I don't know enough of the language to understand 99% of it - that's why I can only pick out things like names of countries.

heh, oops, i shoud have made myself clearer - i meant that the homogeneity of the media in a "free-speech" country like the US is scary....!

  8. birdfarm 96 months ago | reply

Heh, yeah, Pug, I figured it must be something like that. :-) :-) And I agree!

Ebright, thank you for your added notes! Very interesting!!

That's a lot of newspapers. It's always great to see media being able to do what it needs to. This is a great example of media and franchise public relations working together. Nice photo, V.
