1979 Obabikong First Nation Reserve, Lake of the Woods. Setting a post

Monuments found or set during the course of my retracement survey were referenced to two or three "bearing trees" - live trees close by that were slabbed with an axe on the side facing the monument, carved with the initials "BT", and tied in by distance and compass or astronomic bearing. Wood guide posts were also set along line close to the monument, carved with appropriate numbers and letters, and if possible cairned up with a mound of stones so engineered that the crew could dance on it without its falling apart.
