Laura Ingalls Wilder - born February 7, 1867 - was a U.S. author who wrote a series of historical fiction books based on her childhood experiences in a 19th century pioneer family. Her best-known work is the book 'Little House on the Prairie'. The popular 1980's television series by the same title was based on her books.

At the age of 15, Laura accepted her first teaching job, and taught her first term at the Brewster School in De Smet, SD. For a few years, she divided her time between teaching at rural schools and attending school herself in De Smet. Laura ended her teaching career when she married Almanzo Wilder on August 25, 1885.
