    Newer Older

The USS North Carolina BB55 was commissioned on April 9, 1941 and was considered the world’s greatest sea weapon.
She earned 15 battle stars and participated in every major naval offensive in the Pacific area of operations. On June 27, 1947 the NORTH CAROLINA was decommissioned and placed in the Reserve Fleet in Bayonne, New Jersey. In 1958 an announcement was made that she would be scrapped. The citizens of North Carolina led a campaign to save her and to bring her back to her home state. The campaign was successful, and on October 2, 1961 she arrived in her current berth and was dedicated as a memorial to World War II veterans on April 29, 1962
