This building has a bit of Eastern Orthodox feel to it.

Well, we have quite a bit of Ukrainian and Greek immigrants who arrrived in the 1880s, so we've similar architecture too!

Oddly enough, when they started building the National Shrine cathedral, it was a gothic design. I've never learned the reason why the "stylistic' change was made. But maybe it was to set it off differently from the gothic National Cathedral in NW DC which was started earlier than the Shrine. The archives at Catholic University has copies of the original plans & design.
On another note, this is a prominant visual landmark that can be seen from my nieghborhood - it is west of the metro tracks from Brookland, just beyond Catholic University. When you're on Newton Street and look west (toward the setting sun), it's this dome and tower that you see.
In Brookland proper, we have the Monastery on it's 25 acre hill top with it's gardens, fields and woods (they even have their own cemetery for the brothers). It even includes a faux grotto! Nearby is the Howard Divinity School built in the 30's in a great "deco gothic" style. And every block seems to have at least one religious house with nuns, monks or priests. It's unique in Washington, DC.

I like the shades of blue -- blue is often used to honor Our Lady.
