The Colonia XXVIII Ottobre by Clemente Busiri-Vici was built in 1932 on the adriatic coast of Cattolica. This colonia, although comissioned simultaneously with the others depicted, is an example of a different, more playful architectural approach. The futuristic and almost metaphorical forms of the long dormitories 'stranded' on the beach (with the rest of the complex somewhat more traditionally infused with nautic references) are quite a contrast to the more strict and rational styles seen elsewhere - perhaps a rare sign of humour?
Most of the complex is still visible in good condition, although two of the originally four dormitories are now lost. In a most bizarre way, the entire colonia site has recently been engulfed in a new seaside leisure park - turning the buildings into strange new uses, such as the dormitories beeing the only visible parts of an underground aquarium!
Throughout the complex, several recent impromptu inscriptions are visible: Greetings from former colonia-children, with an occasional thanks to whomever decided not to tear these buildings down...
