Crossbill | by IPM.UK

Came across a small flock of crossbills today while out in the forest, we have three species in Scotland and they are almost impossible to tell apart. After pouring over my books and comparing this and other shots and at risk of being proved wrong, I think this one is a juvenile male Scottish crossbill.

For anyone who knows little of crossbills they live on the seeds of pines, and their bill has evolved to pry open the tightly closed cones and get at the seeds ;o))
