A shedding polar fox. Bering Island (A. Shienok)

A blue fox (polar fox); the Bering subspecies

The only endemic species of land mammals in the Commander Islands, it presents a unique opportunity for scientific research as the only major polar fox population living in total geographic isolation.

The Bering Island polar fox is very interesting when it comes to research and nature protection because of its genetic uniqueness. The monitoring programme for the Commander Reserve includes activities on the population census and structure, as well as studying the impact of environmental factors on this unique group.
