* BABY FACE *

Common Paper Wasp - Polistes humilis

FAMILY VESPIDAE

I believe this wasp has only just left the nest as she still has a lot of downy soft hair covering her face. I've not seen one at this life stage up close before, as she matures I'm assuming she'll lose the hair to reveal a shiny face and her colouring will darken (inc her eyes).

She's was found standing on a blackberry leaf and was enjoying a drink of dew. I see this a lot. Its one of the first things they do when they've woken up and had a bit of a clean of their antenna and a stretch.

Taken with mpe-65mm macro @ approx 4x magnification. Series of 3 images stacked. Handheld. The background is the dirt as the leaf was very low to the ground.
