Mr. Peacock

    Newer Older

Woohoo! I finally found my first ever Peacock Salticidae.
(Thanks for help with id Jean) Maratus pavonis

I found this striking fella on a strappy leaved grass plant (the only one in my garden) located in Melbourne (Milawa).

I first learned about these guys existence around 6 months ago and have been searching high and low ever since. So happy I finally found one.

These images just don't do this guy justice he was so very beautiful in person. Next time I hope to get some better images highlighting the colourful pattern on his abdomen and also including his beautiful green eyes in the same frame.

Funny with this guys eyes they don't reflect like most of the other jumpers I have photographed, its almost like they are opaque green. I love his stripey legs too and his mittens with the fancy tufts of hair. I just love everything about this guy. He was very sweet in nature too.

I did notice him signaling to a nearby female (raising his third set of legs) but she wasn't impressed whatsoever. What suprised me was just how small this one was, no more than 2-3mm.

I'm dedicating this series to my fantastic flickr mate Matt, he loves these guys as much as I do, hope you like him Matt and you find your very own at your new place :D

    Taken with Mpe-65mm @ 5x magnification.

It seems that eastern individuals of this species tend to be ever so slightly more drab in the abdominal markings than the ones we get in the west. And tend towards more blue in the underlying colouration. I suspect that there are western, eastern and "northern" (i.e. NSW) subspecies or at least 'races' of this particular species... if not separate species deliniation. There are pavonis that occur in NSW that have a blue crescent on the back of the head.

Maratus is endemic to Australia, although the genus is related to Saitis (such as Saitis barbipes) which occur in Europe and elsewhere.

Excellent observations and by the looks of things all that much harder to locate. I nearly missed this little one, was focusing on a larger jumper (possibly the female) and its only when I looked really closely I noticed there was something unique about this little fella, I quickly looked behind the lens and there was no mistaking that I'd finally found my first ever peacock. I was so stoked and still so excited about it a week later.lol
I'm really hoping I get to see the (volans? with the large abdominal flap). Now I want to get some love shots of the happy couple. Aren't these little creatures so so amazing!
Thanks for your info I really appreciate it :D

He's absolute delight, Mel - what an incredible series of captures of this very tiny little beauty!!! Please don't hide him away one minute longer... he should be stretching his wee legs around in the Elite pool. With wee paddles like those, I bet he'll be a fabulous swimmer ;))

      Beautiful macro shot !!!
