Balos Lagoon, Crete
Pretty incredible isn't it?
We came here in the morning when there was only these two people, a few Italians, myself and my friend. One of the locals in Falassarna told me that during the summer, thousands of people flock to this place either via the ferry or via the beaten up driving trail. The ferry wasn't running in March, and the local told me that in spite of it's beauty, Balos remains off the radar for many tourists.
Our journey to Balos was quite an adventure! We first drove a little two-wheel hire car through 10km of beaten up dirt track before doing a 2km trek over the hill to get to the other side of the headland! And before anyone asks why we didn't go for a 4x4, as we are 21, only one hire car company was willing to provide us with a car - and yes, this was the shady-looking, most run down looking dealer of the lot. You could tell the car had been through the wars, but we were thankful that we made it there and back in one piece. This is my favourite photo from the lagoon, although I should be uploading quite a few more!
