Using a GoPro camera to collect data on pollinators

    Newer Older

I've been experimenting with using GoPro cameras to collect data on pollinator visits, in this case to the magenta morph of Mimulus nanus var. mephiticus near Carson Pass. The cameras are waterproof and dust proof, are very light and easy to pack in to remote locations, and with GoPro's extended battery can record HD footage for about 5 hours before the battery runs out. I've been able to extend runtime to 12 hours or more by connecting the camera to a home-built external power source consisting of a 2700mAh cell phone battery and a small solar panel -- the only constraint is how much footage you can fit on a 32gb memory card.

Neat idea. It would seem that you could get this to run even longer with a little clever engineering.
