Anna Lee Fisher

Anna Lee Fisher was among the first group of astronauts selected specifically for the shuttle - and among the first women astronauts.

I already had my "Space Shuttle: The First 20 Years" book signed by Fisher, so I brought this photo to the World Science Festival. She said it was one of her favorite photos. Brooklyn Bridge Park, Brooklyn, NY, 4 June 2016.

Fisher flew on STS-51-A/Discovery, in 1984. She was slated to fly STS-61-H/Columbia in May 1986 but the Challenger accident caused many planned flights to be delayed or canceled. Shuttle flights resumed in 1988, but Fisher took a leave of absence between 1989 and 1995 to raise her family, returning in 1996. But she never made another shuttle flight.
