The Glory Hole River Witham Lincoln

    Newer Older

The High Bridge or 'Glory Hole' in Lincoln, England is the oldest bridge in the United Kingdom which still has buildings on it. It was built in the 12th century and the oldest building dates from the 14th century.
It is on the River Witham a few metres away from Brayford Pool. The River Witham is navigable from here to Boston on the Wash. The Foss Dyke Navigation, origanally built by the Romans, starts at Brayford Pool and then onto Torksey Lock where boats can pass into the tidal River Trent, either travelling south to Newark and beyond or north to the River Humber, Chesterfield Canal, Stainforth and Keadby Canal or River Ouse.

Not been in the restaurant. Is it worth a visit ?
I have been through several times on my boat though. When I bought my boat 22 years ago we had a mooring the other side of Brayford Pool for a season so spent a lot of time in the area. We also went on cruises to Lincoln and Boston on a number of occasions after we moved the boat to nearer home in West Yorkshire.
Sold the boat three years ago and gone back to caravanning. I miss boating though.
