What I'd prefer for the Safari 5 Reader. Perhaps coming soon as an extension.

umh. I prefer not to see any distraction at all and maybe a welcome thing would be the possibility to go straight to NeXT or previous article like you see in many wordpress blog. Always in a disappearing menu. I mean: two invisible icons at the corners in the "reader view". That I think d be interesting.
  • Dan Rubin PRO 5y

    Yes. Yes indeed.
  • Justin 5y I also thought it would be cool if the menu only appeared when you hovered over to the side, otherwise, like you said, no distractions.

Looks amazing. Hope to see it soon!

Blacking out existing article—like what Safari is already doing—sounds fine; but having the reading area occupy its own space—like what Frank Chimero comped—would be even better!
  • Justin 5y

Bram: Thats why I put that fullscreen button in there...

It may not be as nice as your or Frank's solutions, but I quickly put this together:
Making Safari 5's Reader More Readable by adam.scott

    I'd love your feedback!

    Nice work, Adam.

This could be a personal preference, but I think these line lengths are too long for reading. But that's just me.
  • Justin 5y

The measure on mine is a little long for me. It was quick, and I think I was subconsciously adjusting for Engadget's stupidly large paragraph blocks. Without the inserted paragraph and longer measure, the entire screen would have been one paragraph.

    Thanks Justin!
