The glacier's edge at sunset
The glacier lagoon Jökulsárlón at the edge of Europe's largest glacier, Vatnajökull, is one of my favorite places in Iceland. It has a magical atmosphere of stark otherworldly beauty -- it seems to exude powerful and ever-changing moods as the light reflected by the water and by the blue icebergs shifts when the clouds that often hang low over the cold glacial icemass drift overhead. This powerful aura of the place is amplified by the a very chilly air and deep silence, only interrupted occasionally by cracking sounds of ice blocks breaking off the glacier's edge in the distance or the calls of birds.
I just found this picture in my files from a visit to the lagoon in 2007. It is a bit dark because it was taken in the fading light at sunset, but I felt it exemplified the feeling of this place well so I thought I might as well share it here.
