Launched in Japan in 1997 until 2003 as a compact hybrid car.

Developed at the Toyota, research and developement facility to bridge the gap between electric and petrol engined cars. Launched in Japan 1997 followed by two years as a Japan only car, with a target of 12,000 annual sales and a cost equivelent to $ 16,929 though the build cost was estimated at $ 32,000 per unit.

The car was STYLED in California by designers, who were selected over competing designs from other Toyota design studios.

European sales began in 2000, with the car powered by a 1.5litre Atkinson cycle four cylinder petrol engine a permanent magnet AC electric motor and a a 274-volt nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) battery pack. The gasoline engine developed 70 hp (52 kW) and 82 ft·lbf (111 N·m) of torque. The electric motor generated a maximum of 44 hp (33 kW) and 258 ft·lbf (350 N·m) of torque.

The first geneeration Prius was replaced by a second generation from 2003.
