The Pantera was introduced by De Tomaso to replace the Mangusta model. Designed by American Tom Tjaarda on a Dallara designed chassis and made its debut at the 1970 New York motorshow.

Powered by a 5.8ltr Ford V8 engine, mid mounted driving through a five speed ZF tranaxle. With the early cars producing around 330bhp. Several modifications were made for the 1972 model year Panteras. A new 4 Bolt Main Cleveland Engine, also 351 in. Ford ended there importation into the US in 1975

De Tomaso continued to build the car, however, in ever-escalating forms of performance and luxury for almost two decades for sale in the rest of the world. These included the GT5, launched in 1975 which had bonded and rivetted wheelarch extensions with wider Pirelli P5 tyres and the GT5S model which had blended arches and a distinctive wide-body look. The car kept the Ford V8 engine, but the last Panteras built (the Si) were producing around 500BHP

Quoted performance figures for the GT5 were - output 350 bhp, maximum speed 146 mph, 0-60mph in 5.2 seconds and 18 mpg fuel consumption. Price at launch £ 41,410.
