Mercedes 300SL (1955-63) Engine 2995cc S6 SOHC Production 3528 (1400 Coupe, 1858 Roadster)
Introduced in 1954 as a two seater closed sportscar, later followed by a roadster version. The fastest production car of its day. The idea of a road version of the 300SL racing car was suggested by Max Hoffman the Mercedes US agent and as a result the finished car was first shown at the 1954 New York Motor Show.
Best known for its gullwing doors and also for being the first road car with a direct injection petrol engine.
Powered by a 3.0 litre S6 engine with Bosch mechanical direct injection that delivered 212bhp
Built on a tubular chassis which saved weight gave strength and gave rise to the famous gull wing doors as part of the chassis passed through what would have been the lower half of the door.
