RIO DE JANEIRO (July 27, 2013) - On their eighth day in Rio for World Youth Day, the pilgrims from Boston began with Mass celebrated by Fr. Matt Williams and Fr. Jeremy St. Martin. Later they will make their way to Copacabana beach for the vigil with Pope Francis.
Due to adverse conditions at the original site for the vigil of Campus Fidei, the vigil and final Mass have moved. There will be no overnight vigil at the beach, but after the vigil tonight pilgrims will go back to their lodging and return in the morning for Mass.
More than 160 pilgrims from the Archdiocese of Boston are traveling to World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, between July 20 and 29, 2013, along with millions of youth from around the world, Pope Francis, and their own Cardinal Seán P. O'Malley, OFM Cap, Archbishop of Boston.
George Martell of Pilot New Media is traveling with the pilgrims to send back photos, YouTube videos, social media updates, and even real-time streaming video so that those who can't attend in person may be virtual pilgrims. Follow the pilgrimage at www.wydrioboston.com.
