Chartres city and Cathedral
Mostly the cathedral, which I visited on a cloudy day with showers, not good. You're supposed to come when it's sunny.

The cathedral is relatively modest in size and ambition compared to the huge, tall Notre-Dame de Paris, but it's in excellent shape, has much of its original medieval stained glass, and has undergone a recent restoration/renovation in which much of the interior has been cleaned and painted (!) the way it was originally, complete with lines to simulate joints in the stonework. The contrast between the light restored stonework and the dark unrestored is considerable.

I'm pretty sure restorers wouldn't be allowed to make such enormous changes in, say, England.
