Geneva: Cafe Universal

We were having a rather uninspired day in Geneva. The wind was bitterly whipping off the lake and in comparison to the other Swiss cities we stopped in Geneva was ugly. Our stomachs were also grumbling and we weren't sure where to eat.

Cafe Universal's menu spelled out on a giant chalkboard beckoned us from across the street and we made a beeline for the restaurant. Inside we discovered a tasteful menagerie of decorations. Betty Boop, Mario, Scarface, and others were peeking out from corners. Colorful enough to make us smile, but not distracting to the point of tacky.

I'm pretty sure my dish translated to monkfish, but what sold me on it was the trompette de la mort (trumpets of death). Maddie had veal in honey. We started off with foie gras and snails. It was freakin' delicious and possibly the best meal we ate on our entire trip. We are currently trying to figure out how to take a dinner trip to Geneva simply to go back to Cafe Universal.

I don't have a top five favorite restaurants in the world list, but if I did this would be on it.

They also have a ridiculous website that is as playful as the restaurant. Seriously, just let it run through without clicking anything for a few minutes.
