Turning a deaf ear

Ring-billed Gulls - Larus delarewarensis

The Icelandic River runs through town and is at a lower elevation through most of the townsite. I found a place where I can walk and watch these gulls in the morning. This pair is almost always in the same spot. I've been trying different settings without blowing the whites totally out. It is challenging because I have to shoot upwards to where the gulls are sitting in the sun.

I'm pretty happy with the results of this one. Very little tweaking in Photoshop Elements was needed and there were no "blinkies" on my camera screen when I took the image. Best of all, I liked my histogram. Yay!

Here's the settings: Comments, suggested invited!

I'll be away all of Tuesday and probably on Wednesday. Until then, may your days be filled with joy and your May Day baskets be filled with wildflowers!

Beautifully taken Nancy. Whites are tough in bright light but I think this looks very nice.

First of all, I would like to say you did a wonderful job with the exposure here as it is spot on. Secondly, we all do things differently to get the right exposure and make sure the method chosen is right for you. I usually increase shutter speeds, apeture, and reduce ISO. I usually will set these too low and then use my flash as the light. It creates more of a lighting during an overcast day when whites don't tend to get blown out as much. That is just the way I do it though and am not sure if it would work for you. :^)

First of all I do agree with Bob the birdman.... I like the pose you captured,it tells story..
Sometimes I don't have the time to change exposure while photographing a subject or the light is not right at that moment,I just feel happy I capture the moment even if didn't make a great picture.... Yes,whites are difficult so it is when you got lights and shadows to deal with, but once again we shouldn't stop photographing a subject just becuse the conditions are not at prime time.. I just take the shot..
I like this capture because it tells story and that is the first thing I noticed here...
Great job capturing the moment. Very nice light and details.

I like this shot as well. I can't see anything in the metadata that I would have done much differently. My camera actually provides the 'best' saturation and contrast when I shoot at ISO 500, which would alter the shutter speed. Nikon's exposure readings have a slight bias towards over-exposing, so I tend to use -2/3 EV as my default when shooting towards neutral or slightly darker backgrounds. (Not at all sure about that for this particular image, without being there.)
