Around Butchart Gardens

The Butchart Gardens is located in Brentwood Bay, B.C. about a half hour drive from downtown Victoria. It is one of the top public gardens in Canada. It began in the early 1900's when Jennie Butchart wanted to have a gardens on their estate. The first garden was the Japanese garden which was completed in 1912. The sunken gardens in the grounds of the old limestone quarry that had been part of her husband's business began to be developed in 1909 and they were completed in 1921. The now Italian garden was created in 1926 and the rose garden in 1929. The property remains in the ownership and care of the Butchart family. The gardens is now a year round attraction, with a Christmas light display in season. The gardens were designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 2004.These are photos of the various areas of the gardens.
