Rita Crane Photography: Caffe Florian at Night, Venice

Seen from outside in the winter cold from a deserted San Marco Square, Caffe Florian looked like something out of a fairytale. One could almost see it: the weary adventurer having voyaged far and wide, finally reaching the enchanted place the sailors had shown him on the ancient map. There was that little cafe, sparkling in the night like a jewel ..... and he could hear soft music and the laughter of the guests as they sipped their precious drinks!

Along the arcade, floods had eaten into the stone flanks of the ancient pillars, and one could palpably sense these old walls whispering the deep desires and dreams of Venetians who had lived and breathed here for centuries, next to the dark shimmering lagoon. Here's the Caffe Florian's official website and a little more information about it here: -- it opened in 1720.

Luckily I had a tripod with me.....finally found one after walking all over Venice that day ......with plans to return and shoot the square at night, when San Marco was silent, with hardly a soul out in the damp chilly air.
