Rita Crane Photography: Moored Boats, Varenna, Lake Como

This first image is a glimpse of an aspect of the lake that points to its rugged and wild look during winter. Varenna is a delightful former fishing village on the East shore of Lake Como at the base of the Alps. From there you can see Switzerland's snowy peaks to the north. (See the photos posted below.)

Description: It was a chilly afternoon - in early March - and the wind was blowing hard, down from the snowy mountains. These brave little boats were rocking wildly in the choppy water. Late afternoon sunshine warmed up the scene with its golden glow.

I thought this looked familiar. I was there just one month after you. Here's a shot taken in Varenna on April 10, 2006.

..... After lunch, we stopped in at the lakeside house of the Lorenzetti family, at Varenna, on Lake Como. We sat on the terrace, talking, until late in the afternoon, when we took a stroll, that led us to some steps, leading down a rocky promontory, to the waterfront, where three small sailing boats, bathed in the warm rays of the late afternoon sun, were rocking on their anchors. Then she pulled on my sleeve,, and said firmly, John, it's time to go..... (from 'Memoirs of an Englishman in Italy').
