Police seizes foreign EU-cars
On Saturday 4th July 2009, the Southampton police seized cars from other EU countries, saying that their insurance is invalid in the UK.
These regulations were not announced and no warning was given before. So there was actually no chance for foreign people to avoid this situation.
The release fee is 150 GBP plus 20 GPB per day and cars are taken away until the car holder can provide a valid insurance. Getting an insurance is quite difficult, since most UK insurances expect a valid UK car registration and this can only be obtained with a valid insurance. So, this might be a deadlock.
About 40 foreign cars were seized on that weekend.
This action is an offense against people from other EU countries and I don't know if it is legal according to EU laws.
