Assignment: PCA83 – Still Life

Deadline: Oct. 25th, 2009

Image tag: pca83

What better way to hone the skill of a photographer than to have them set up there own scene that is visually pleasing and lit well??

So for this assignment, let's try a still life and by this I mean I want us photographers to stage our subject(s), choose the lighting that will best work for our subject(s).

A few setting up outside, or using available light ( I know I love available light too)!!! Only color images will do (that one will be hard for me :) )

Flash lights, lamplight or even candles can be used (really anything but available light) and your subject (s) can be anything except people and animals...............any inanimate object(s) is fine. Color and contrast adjustments, and cropping are acceptable, but try to keep your images true to what you saw when you looked through the camera

WIT: Some day I will move into the world of flash photography, but until then controlled lighting will come from more domestic sources. In this case I set up my trusty black foamcore background on the kitchen island which is lit by a pendant light with a halogen bulb. To help diffuse the light a bit, I held a translucent flexible cutting mat near the light source. To add a bit of fill light on the right side, I set up a white cutting board to act as a reflector. The camera was on a tripod and the two second timer was used. I took several shots from various angles, and even used a small flashlight to paint in some light in some cases. I was surprised how well that worked. For post processing I adjusted the white balance in RAW and tweaked a levels layer in PSE before a bit of sharpening and cropping.

I was at a loss for a subject this week but while watching the baseball playoffs I remembered the small collection of old gloves we have. I tried various arrangements of the gloves (all, just one, two), the ball, and a bat. I had hoped to get more attempts in this week, but time really flew by.
