Democracy Cafe - Youth In Action

We celebrated youth in action at our second Democracy Cafe, where 50 activists and artists of all ages gathered for a fun afternoon of art, music and politics. This community gathering took place at the O’Hanlon Center for the Arts in Mill Valley, on February 18, 2018.

Participants created their own political signs, brainstormed ideas for a new art float, and sang-along a medley of songs for a better world with the Freedom Singers.

Young activists from Climate Our Generation and 360BayArea spoke about their environmental protection work, testifying about oil drilling with local and state governments, as well as protesting the new coal terminal in the Port of Oakland.

Featured performers included poet Klipschultz and musician Joel Hamilton, as well as singers/songwriters Matt Jaffe and Patrick Maley, who played a wonderful mix of personal and politically-minded songs. We are very grateful to them for inspiring us through their lovely music and poetry.

We love that so many young people participated in this event, and joined their voices, hearts and minds with our community. Their enthusiasm and creativity are our best hope for building a better world.

Many thanks to Dana Dworin, Suz Lipman, Craig Love and Gary Yost for recording this event with photos and videos. We are also very grateful to Carol Korenbrot, Bruce Mowery, Marilyn Price and Laurie Riley for organizing this event, to Jean Bolte, Natalie Frederick and Geo Monley for helping participants create political art, and to all the MVCAN members who supported this project.

Democracy Cafe is a series of free creative and civic events led by Fabrice Florin and a growing community of activists and artists in Marin. We think making art, playing music and talking with people of all ages and backgrounds can build mutual understanding and engage us to take meaningful political action together.

Join your neighbors to make political art and music -- and keep democracy alive!
