My young friend Natalina loaned me her book ‘Haiku Mind’, a collection of 108 haikus by poets from around the world, across different times.
I’m now reading one haiku a day and it’s helping me pay more attention to the word around me. The goal is to observe nature as it is, without interpretation.
I was inspired to write one of my own, based on the objects in front of me at the time:
The succulents are growing back
The bowl is empty
My life awaits
All of it seemed true at the time. I like that this poetic form shares journalism’s focus on facts, even if its purpose is different.
