St Mary's Church, Fort St. George

Another BIG print from my Nikon FM10.

The steeple of the Church of St. Mary, in the Fort St. George campus, in the city of Madras/Chennai.

Chennai was where the British Empire took off, and one can still see many of their finest buildings here, in the fort that they built on what was essentially deserted beach. Construction of fort St. George was started (as a factory) on the 22nd of August, 1639 - that makes it, and the city of Madras, about 369 years old.

It's here, in the year 1680, Governor Streynsham Master began building the St. Mary's church - the first Anglican church in the sub-continent. The church has some of the oldest tombstones in this part of the world. (More here)

Madras, I tell you, has more history than you can shake a stick at.
