Crow Nest Junction Signal Box 6
Crow Nest Junction box diagram as seen on 26th January 2013.
The box worked to Warrington PSB in the Wigan direction and to Manchester Picc on the Bolton line and absolute block on the Manchester direct route working to Atherton Goods Yard or Walkden when the latter is switched out.
The F.A. Cup 4th round took the mighty Everton FC to Bolton Wanderers which in turn took me to Horwich via Hindley on a very snowy Saturday.
The opportunity was taken to revisit Crow Nest Junction after a gap of 35 years.
As part of the on-going drive to wipe out the traditional signal box three more boxes were closed in North West Manchester over the weekend of July 27th / 28th 2013.
Walkden, Atherton Goods Yard & Crow Nest Junction Signal Boxes finally succumbed.
The box here is another BR LMR Type 15 box opened in 1972 in conjunction with the opening of Warrington PSB. Prior to that a 92 lever L & Y box situated in the vee of the junction once oversaw operations of a massive quadruple track three way junction. What a piece of railway this must have been.
John Hinson's truly excellent little piece on his signalbox.org website explains the history...
Control of the area has now passed to Manchester SCC and a new Crow Nest workstation.
