Footrest, Antique Koken Barber's Chair

Koken barber chairs are still found in many independently owned barber shops because they are built like tanks. They are also highly sought-after as antiques. The chair was invented by German Earnest Koken and was the first to use hydraulics to raise and lower it for the comfort of the customer and convenience of the barber. The classic chairs are no longer made, and the company has changed hands, but next time you get a haircut look at the footrest of the chair—it may look like this. (I gave a print of this picture to my barber, whose shop is still equipped with Koken chairs, ca. 1950.)
