Royal Gazette, New York (October 4, 1780)

American Revolutionary War, 1774-1783

This four-page newspaper dispensed general news and government information.

At this point in the American Revolutionary War, Britain was firmly in control of New York City. Nonetheless New York Governor James Robertson stated that "principal inhabitants of the city have requested to be armed and embodied" and he ordered that "every male inhabitant [of New York] from the age 17 to 60 years, immediately to enroll himself... [in] the district in which such inhabitant respectively resided; those persons who already belonged to the volunteer companies in this city; the firemen, and people called Quaker only excepted."

The Bain family donated this newspaper to the library in 2008.
