There is such thing as a free lunch

And this was mine at the Day of Traditions in El Palmar yesterday; unidentified white fish (very nice, mind you) stew, Canarian potatoes (and I only took half the potato ration) in their skins hiding beneath a slice of pan or pella de gofio (a loaf made from toasted, milled grain, nuts and dried fruits); a huge hunk of local goat cheese, a hunk of bread and, of course, red wine. This same meal was served to hundreds of people, which was a marvel of organization. Of course, it's not really "free" - it has to be paid for somehow and I will talk about how these fiestas are financed later - but there's no charge for entrance, nor to line up and get thoroughly fed.
