NCR 255 Cash Register Offline Envelope

When electronic cash registers were first used there would only be one computer processor - the size of a washing machine - that would run them without a back-up. When that went down or during a power failure the registers would have to be put into offline/stand alone mode. This is an offline envelope for the NCR 255 registers we had at Super Fresh. Only a couple of the keys were used in this mode, shown on the envelope. It operated like an adding machine with all departments rung under one key. I remember checking in offline mode a couple of times, the motor would run continuously instead of just when the printer operated so there was a constant loud hum. It worked OK when products were price marked and prices keypunched, but wouldn't be good today with shelf pricing. Today, a back-up PC is provided and used if the master front end PC goes down.
