    Scooter girl, 1960
    Trademark Mechanisches Spielzeug VEB
    DDR (Eastern Germany)
    Wind-up with zig zag action
    17 x 14 x 4 cm.

A wonderfull toy from the Volks Eigener Betrieb 'Mechanisches Spielzeug' in the former DDR (East Germany). In recent days a re-issue of this toy came on the market, but it lacks the subtle refinement of the original.

This is marvelous. I just love the stippling on the front fender and the apex of the rear shell. I think this is my favorite of your collection.

it's a lovely lady too! on a 'peoples own' scooter ..

Yes, she is lovely. What is the origin of "peoples own," is that from the toy or is that how these scooters were known in the former DDR?

VEB = Volks Eigener Betrieb; that means something like 'peoples own factory' ..

It's good to see the original as I have a recent repro copy. I'm getting interested in DDR toys.Is there much out there?

The DDR tin toy production was rather limited I would guess. After the war the toy factories like the famous Lehmann were taken over by the state. Mostly trucks were made and millitairy vehicles .. privately owned transport was no priority in the socialist republic. The book 'Blechspielzeug: auto's und motorrader" by Rudger Huber gives a short overview of the DDR production. In the Sovjet Union it is the same story is my impression.. only one nice motorcycle was made - with and without sidecar - and a rather rude copy of the German Schuco Miracomot.
