The last time I saw Garth (1971)

Newer Older

This was taken at the wedding of my oldest brother, Jon, to his first wife. I was a bridesmaid and my brother Garth was dressed in his usual hippie-neo-edwardian style.

I always think of the Kinks song "Dedicated Follower of Fashion" when I look at this shot:

"...They seek him here, they seek him there,
In Regent street and Leicester Square.
Everywhere the Carnabetian army marches on,
Each one a dedicated follower of fashion.

Oh yes he is (oh yes he is), oh yes he is (oh yes he is).
His world is built ’round discoteques and parties.
This pleasure-seeking individual always looks his best
’cause he’s a dedicated follower of fashion.

Oh yes he is (oh yes he is), oh yes he is (oh yes he is).
He flits from shop to shop just like a butterfly.
In matters of the cloth he is as fickle as can be,
’cause he’s a dedicated follower of fashion.

From "Dedicated Follower of Fashion" by Ray Davies of the Kinks

He was a horror...that is the point of the shot. Looks can be deceiving. Wake up people!

amazing how this photo keeps popping up when I refresh my flickr page--I'd delete my comment, but the ongoing dialogue is always so interesting. Yes, he made an impressive first impression (obviously) even I am beginning to understand how he can wear a person out.

Actually I no longer "see" his dark, brooding presence. Instead, I'm intriqued by the photo, seeing the younger you--like some Diane Arbus photo--Garth is spiraling into darkness; but 'Beth at a Crossroads', where two paths diverged. The photo/scientists say our eyes are always drawn to the brightest spots in a photo--here it's your forehead and your heart. I have seen this image so often now, that it seems like a variation of the Taijitu--the yin/yang diagram of ultimate power. So--yes, it's evolved for me, and I understand why it captures the imagination of so many. A very good picture, really--even better than I first credited it. Who was the photographer, do you remember?
I'm certain no one at the time imagined how and where it would be appreciated today--it must be the "most viewed, most everything" on your stream?

It has the highest viewed and faves on my stream yes. It was the wedding photographer for my other brother's first marriage. I cropped it to include just me and Garth. It is actually part of a larger shot that includes most of the wedding party.

Thanks for your insightful comments Bob. Sometimes all the attention he gets even in death just annoys the crap out of me. He did that in life, and it carries on..... Glad you can see past that and see me, for a change. It is refreshing. AS the "lost child" in my family, I was never truly seen by any of them

sometimes camouflage is a survival skill. Like tax time, I like to fly with the flock on April 15, perhaps the hunter's birdshot (or the taxman's audit) won't find me. Anyway, yes--you are by far the more compelling presence in this picture. Your poor brother seems sadly one-dimensional, almost a cardboard figure, without eyes. You--well, you HAVE eyes. Still.

No insight from me. When it comes to this photo, I only have eyes for Beth.

There's a really interesting feel I get out of this. Kind of an awkwardness maybe? I dunno..But I do know I really like it a lot.

    I can't believe I was 17 in 1971 when I met my "now" husband...
married 35 years this coming November! Your photo (the hair,
the clothes, everything) is really reminiscent of that era. LOVELY!

I found your photo quite by mistake...looking for wedding dresses :)
What a cute dress that is....a themed wedding then?

Your brother was beautiful :) ...in a Twilight sort of way, handsome but dark...especially his eyes in this photo...they are quite scary even.
I love his style and hair :-)

I like old photo.Thank you for sharing. Ha,,,I think preparations for the wedding was a real hassle. The dress of the groom should match to the wedding dress of bride. In general, groom can prepare two suits, one formal one for witness ceremony and a relatively casual one for the later party.

    You both are gorgeus!

This pic is like wine, age made it better.

Thanks for sharing the story with all!

Something behind his eyes look dark. Good looking on the outside, not so much on the inside. I hope that doesn't offend you.
