Mom and Dad (1956)

The truth is that my mother never loved my father.

She needed a husband, Dad was available and more than willing. I am sure dad lusted after her (who wouldn't?), but he was incapable of loving anyone. He wanted a beautiful woman on his arm, and she needed a father for her son (my brother Garth).

Garth was conceived after mom left her first husband. His biological father was a married man with whom she had a life-long affair.

At first, she had wanted an abortion, but they were illegal and hard to get during the 50's. She did not find a suitable doctor to perform the procedure in time. She could not face the scandal of having a child and not being married, so she told my father the baby was his and the rest of what followed is what happened to all of us. They were married in November of 1951, and my brother Garth was born in July the next year.

It was not pretty.

Her on-going life-long relationship with this other married man quite literally shattered all of our lives.

She never told my father or any of us the truth about this. Dad thought he fathered Garth until he died. She carried this secret, and many others, to her grave.

The shot says it all?
