Black Stork (Ciconia nigra), Eastern Ardennes, Belgium
This is a long-distance (digiscoping) shot of a Black stork with 3 chicks. The nest is ca. 15 m above ground in a tall beech tree. Standing on the forest ground, I was lucky enough to find a spot without too many branches in front of the nest. Due to the low light and inherent constraints of digiscoping, the exposure time for this picture was 0.33 seconds !
The Belgian Ardennes have a healthy population of Black Storks, currently estimated well above 50 breeding pairs, and possibly still increasing. Breeding success is generally good, with 3 or 4 chicks successfully raised per breeding pair and year.
