‘Ooh that's why I'm easy
I'm easy like Sunday morning!’
Taking the dog for a walk, a brew in hand, watching the world and the trains go by; this gentleman has easy like Sunday morning all figured out!
One interpretation of the song is the description of a relationship ending. An alternative take is that it’s a relief at a person being who they want to be ‘why would anyone put chains on me?’
I think the alternative view has some weight since Lionel Richie wrote the song whilst at a meeting with the Commodors’ business manager. He started scribbling down some thoughts in a notebook like "I wish success was easy like a Sunday morning" and "Success makes you be what everybody wants you to be". He later looked at the notes and this song is the result.
The song was released in March 1977, making number 4 in the US Billboard chart and number 9 in the U.K. It also featured in an advert for Levis jeans.
Choose what you did on Sunday morning, I hope you had a relaxing time.
