Tsemay warrior searching a wife - Ethiopia

    Newer Older

In key Afer market, a Tsemay tribe man, with feathers on the head: it means that he achieved the cow jump, and now is looking for a wife, so he tries to look beautiful to seduce girls. Like Hamers, the Tsemay boys must jump over a range of cows to have the right to become a husband!
To be honest, taking pictures of those men was very complicated as we arrived late at teh market, and after 4 pm, all the men, including this one start to drink a local beer, and become drunk and agressive...One of them wanted to keep my Hasselblad! Now i'm laughing about this episode, but when it happened, it was really stressful!

Superb. Do you pay people for taking their pictures? Taking pictures of people in Africa made us feel like being intruders.

      Thanks!
in tjhis part of Ethiopia, you do not have choice! Most of the time you have to pay, a little fee, ,few cents. If you stay in a village for 1 or 2 nights, as you're part of the scenery, people stop asking for money!
The big thing is that pro photographers come for a week to take pics, and make a book, and as they do not have many time, they pay a lot (hundreds of euros) to have all the life themas and attitude.. so when you come after those guys, it's difficult to negociate with few cents! Fews cents are a good amount of money in this area; Hundred of euro are a fortune.

      Nice B&W photo, well taken!

Hi, i am an Art Director for `Howards and Caz`s Gallery` and would be very honoured if you would consider posting your stunning photo into the Gallery.
This Gallery is so different than anything flickr has done before, as it is a tough Gallery to belong to, and now the bar has raised to Platinum level, and only the best will be accepted, and it is my opinion that this wonderful piece here belongs with us ……. I hope you will consider posting your beautiful photo in, as i feel it has the standard required to be a part of this Gallery......Kind regards..Caz (AD)
