This is making me my miss my fish. He only lasted 6 months :'(

What's your secret to keeping a fish happy for 5 years?
I changed his water every week too.

I am not an expert but the 2 main causes are the water itself and the feeding for betas dying early.
I use either tap water (ours seem fine for fish not sure about other places) or spring water. I feed him only 3 little beta fish pellets a day. My other betas were quick into finding them, Elliot is a bit dumb when it comes to food and I have to make sure I drop them right above his eye otherwise he just keeps on swimming :)

Ahh... this makes a lot of sense now :(

I must have been feeding the poor fella 2-3 times more!
On top of that my colleagues were sneaking in goodness how much more despite my futile attemps to hide his food.

I've been later told spring water is the best too, though I've only used tap water. Thanks for sharing this with me Ms Tartelette!
