In Bijapur we visited the impressive Gol Gumbaz, the mausoleum of Mohammed Adil Shah, Sultan of Bijapur; it was completed in 1656. The dome is an impressive 44 m in external diameter. The building is constructed from dark grey basalt.
The floor gives a good impression of the workmanship of the buiders: the slabs of basalt, while irregular in shape, fit seamlessly together. At various points it also contains nicely patterned grids (apparently to drain rain water) which are precisely square, with the surrounding stones made to fit exactly.
