Avison Ensemble 'Corelli at Christmas' concert, Newcastle Cathedral, 29 November 2012

Here we are rehearsing in Newcastle Cathedral.

To herald the 2012 Christmas season the Avison Ensemble presented a concert in St Nicholas Cathedral of Baroque music centering around Corelli's wonderful Christmas Concerto. The Ensemble was joined by the soprano Kristy Swift to perform Scarlatti's Cantata Pastorale 'Per la Nascita di Nostro Signore' (For the Birth of Our Lord) and Vivaldi's Salve Regina. The Ensemble also performed joyous concerti by Corelli and Handel to a packed cathedral audience making this a truly celebratory start to the 2012 Advent time.

Australian-born soprano Kristy Swift is the recipient of numerous awards and scholarships, including Australia's largest and most prestigious award for opera singers, the Herald Sun Aria. She has performed extensively throughout Australia and Europe, performing with Musica Antiqua, Köln and Opera Bergen, Norway. In the UK she has performed with the London Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Opera.

The Avison Ensemble is the outstanding period instrument orchestra based in Newcastle upon Tyne, which plays and popularises the music of Charles Avison (1709-1770) and other English classical composers of the Baroque period, such as Garth, Arne and Herschel. The Ensemble also performs Purcell, Handel, Vivaldi, Corelli, Geminiani, Pergolesi, Teleman, Rameau, Bach, Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven.
