Reaching for the Sky

Sky and steeple of Sts. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church in Dubina, Texas. The area was settled by a group of Czech immigrants in the mid 19th century, and the cross visible at lower center has some Czech writing at its base. This is one of the famous painted churches near Schulenburg. The early settlers wanted churches that looked like those they had known in their original countries, but those churches featured stonework with native stone. This part of Texas does not have such stone, so the settlers made do with wood painted to resemble stone. Hence the term, 'painted churches.'
