Tiergarten Holocaust Memorial
This short audio documentary is focused on the €600,000 gay Holocaust memorial monument in the central German park Tiergarten,
where the people of Germany commemorate the deaths of 55,000 gay men and women who were
persecuted under Nazi occupation . The monument was opened 27th May 2008 but Berlin Mayor Klaus
Wowereit and Germany's Culture Minister, Bernd Neumann and yet within 3 months was desecrated
by vandals. Proving that the fight against oppression still remains today and as the Mayor said
" The kissing scene shown in the monument evidently hit the mark. Even in a democratic society there
are people who can't stand the sight of men kissing in public."
The video takes personal sound bites from members of the public who took time to visit the memorial
and comment on how it made them feel. The audio was remotely recorded
to allow the viewers their anonymity and also to collect their true feelings on what they saw. Thanks to, Mani, Kristen, Sebastian.
