Marshall Fields

Marshall Fields, despite the ill-advised recent renaming by Macy's, represents all that is Chicago - big, friendly, strong roots, merchandise for the masses and elites alike. Marshall Field began his retail career in Chicago in 1856, but didn't found his eponymous company until 1881. The famous State Street store (the interior atrium seen here) is actually the combination of several different buildings. The original 1892 buiilding was designed by Charles Atwood of the D.H. Burnham ("make no small plans") architecture firm.
